The programme promotes cooperations between German universities and various African Institutes for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) that are home to a chair funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The aim of the programme is to conduct research together with the respective chair holders and to promote young scientists in the field of mathematics.

 

 

Background information

Since 2012, the DAAD, together with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), has been supporting the "Next Einstein Initiative". At the AIMS centers, which are embedded in the "Next Einstein Initiative", excellent African master students study applied mathematics.

Following the example of the AIMS center in South Africa, five other centers have been established in Ghana, Cameroon, Rwanda, Senegal and Tanzania. The AIMS center in South Africa was founded in 2003 as a partnership project between the six universities of Cambridge, Cape Town, Oxford, Paris Sud XI and Western Cape.

Thanks in particular to Germany's commitment, research at the AIMS centers is being conducted at the highest level on relevant issues of the future. Research chairs have been established at almost all locations. AIMS researchers are not only well networked internationally, but also work closely with local and regional universities and research institutions to establish a Pan-African network. To ensure that research is relevant and applied, AIMS maintains close contact with industry and business.

In order to give the research chairs an international orientation and to enable German universities to become involved in the AIMS network, the DAAD promotes university collaborations with AvH-funded chair holders as well as PhD and postdoctoral fellows from its research team.

 

Goals

• Graduate and junior scientists are prepared for a profession that requires mathematical competencies.
• Scientists have gained international research experience.
• Research results have been published and the public is informed about the program.
• Teaching at the partner institutions has been expanded and internationalized.
• Networks between the cooperation partners (as well as industry, if applicable) have been established.
