With a broad range of scholarships, partnerships and advisory services, the DAAD is committed to cooperation with the Global South.

  • In September 2015, the UN General Assembly and stakeholder from developing and industrialised countries jointly issued the Development Agenda 2030/“Sustainable Development Goals". The Agenda places a strong emphasis on the principle of partnership to find joint solutions to global challenges which equally affect the South and North. International science and effective higher education systems are strong levers for realising the development goals.

  • As an intermediary organisation, the DAAD supports German universities and their international partners in their development policy engagement. With our partnership approach, we add a civil society component to development cooperation policies at a governmental level. Especially when political relations are strained, such projects are alternative pathways for German development cooperation beyond bilaterally negotiated agreements.

Cooperation projects build on the existing capacities of partner universities, strengthen their ownership and thus enable long-term development successes. A results-based monitoring system ensures the effectiveness of our programmes and improves the quality and transparency of our work.
