Special features regarding teaching

Interdisciplinary degree course that integrates the fundamentals of natural sciences, mathematics and statistics with the various sub-disciplines of physical geography (atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, pedosphere) and ecology (biosphere and ecosphere). Students learn how ecosystems function and how to analyse environmental problems. In field trips and internships, they learn about special features of natural and human-influenced ecosystems, receive practical training in the laboratory, gain insight into many professional fields, and learn how to work with geodata and models.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Universitè de la Réunion, Frankreich; Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa, Portugal; Università degli Studi di Padova, Italien; Universität Mikolaja Kopernika in Torun, Polen; Universität Göteborg, Schweden; University of Wyoming, USA; UNAB Santiago, Chile; UFSC Florianopolis, Brasilien; UdG Guadalajara, Mexiko; Yonsei University, Korea

Special features regarding the equipment

The institutes supporting the courses in Geo-Ecology have excellent equipment in the field of Environmental Analysis (Inorganic and Organic Trace Analysis in the laboratory) and Environmental Measurement Technology (applies to all environmental sub-sections – Water (e.g. discharge measurement, ground water monitoring), Air (e.g. eddy-covariance measurement stations, particulate measurement), and Soil (e.g. tension and water content monitoring, state-of-the-art procedures for determination of soil-hydraulic parameters). In accordance with the "Modelling" focus of the campus, a variety of numerical tools are used in teaching and research.

Special features regarding research activities

Our research includes both basic and application-oriented research. Current sponsors are DFG, BMBF, BMWi, State of Lower Saxony, FNR, DBU, DAAD). Many inter- and transdisciplinary collaborative projects aim to understand the causes and effects of pressing environmental problems and to develop proposals for solutions. There is close cooperation with the engineering institutes of the faculty in the context of the focus "City of the Future" and the diverse environment of the research region Braunschweig, including agricultural research at the Thünen Institute and JKI.
