The overarching goal of the interdisciplinary One Health Training and Research Network is to improve global health by understanding structural health problems caused by the living environment and developing context-specific solutions through a holistic and participatory approach to development cooperation with a focus on education and training. The network’s research activities with partner higher education institutions in nine countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America primarily serve to teach research skills.

The GPN is dedicated to achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17 – global partnership for sustainable development. As a network of 12 higher education institutions and some 20 non-governmental organisations, the GPN addresses the opportunities and limits of global partnerships in the fields of development cooperation, global economy and knowledge production in research, teaching and education. Collaborative ventures in development cooperation are particularly concerned with issues of access, accountability and participation in the global economy, as well as agriculture, finance and renewable energy.

The starting point of the exceed centre SDG Nexus Network is the idea that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations are interrelated to some extent and that in many cases there are conflicting goals that jeopardise their achievement by 2030. The project aims to develop possible solutions to this challenge based on the so-called nexus approach. Among other things, joint cooperation projects through the SDG Nexus are being implemented with the involvement of non-university research institutions, decision-makers and political institutions; various conference and publication formats are being established, and training and further education programmes are being developed for the next generation of scientists – the agents of change. These include a virtual degree programme as well as the implementation of a doctoral scholarship programme and the involvement of young postdocs in teaching, research and outreach.

Berlin Institute of Technology and partners

GCSMUS aims to apply social science research methods to promote sustainable urban development by linking social science methods, knowledge transfer, exchange and implementation with urban policy-making, planning and design. In addition, GCSMUS seeks to contribute to the achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 within the framework of the 2030 Agenda. The planned measures focus on five areas: education (building a global methodological network through conferences), experience (acquiring applicable skills in research through teaching and research training courses), evaluation (developing methodologies through doctoral theses and postdoctoral research project proposals), exchange (acquiring applicable skills in practice through practical empirical implementation) and improvement (workshops to close the gap between research and practice).

University of Leipzig and partners

With the establishment of the African Centre for Career Enhancement & Skills Support (ACCESS), existing cooperation between partner higher education institutions in African countries and the University of Leipzig is to be harnessed in the spirit of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The network acts as an interface for the higher education institutions of the African continent as well as partner organisations involved in development cooperation in the Global South. The centre works in four thematic areas: capacity-building to promote employability at higher education institutions, promotion of higher education business, employability research in the African context as well as the already established African German Entrepreneurship Academy.

Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and partners

Drug addiction is still seen as a problem of ‘social deviance’ in Central Asia. Repressive drug laws result in a large proportion of those affected facing long prison sentences and the police and judiciary failing to cooperate effectively with health services. This promotes social exclusion among those affected. The project aims to support the training of social work in Central Asian countries since this has a key role to play in the prevention and treatment of drug addiction in Europe and especially in Germany. In addition, the project endeavours to promote professional exchange between the German and the Asian partner higher education institutions.

Technical University of Munich and partners

This project is dedicated to the promotion of a sustainable energy supply. The aim is to conduct research on energy supply and link it to higher education on an international level. The focus is on the latest generation of so-called mini-grids as part of the power supply in the countries of the Global South. In addition, the project promotes two forms of entrepreneurship: opportunity entrepreneurship and necessity entrepreneurship. While opportunity entrepreneurship is innovative and growth-oriented, necessity entrepreneurship focuses on the resources, capabilities and growth potential available. Both forms of entrepreneurship have an important role to play in the context of the Global South.
